you are your surroundings

Over the weekend we read an excerpt out of the story Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. This story was interesting to me because reading about Roseto reminded me of a place where my Great Aunt lived in Italy. She lived in a small town three hours south of Rome and it wasn't easy to get their either. When my mom visited her, she had to take a plane to Rome then a train then a cab to the town. This little secluded town had many generations of families living under the same roof, the same as the town in the story. The people in this town were stress free and loved to talk to one another,They drank wine and danced for hours on end. My mom said they all just loved each other and loved to have a good time. Also there are no grocery stores anywhere around the town, so people grew there own food and ate everything fresh from the garden or the farm. This reliance on others in the small town made everyone so close. Their surroundings were their family and friends and everyone was in perfect harmony with each other as well as their body's, because they didn't have much medicine. My Aunt died at the astonishing age of 104 and this age is not uncommon for this part of Italy. These people live such naturally long lives because they have a natural stress free surrounding to place themselves in. Good health to some can be eating healthy and working out regularly but to me another important thing is to surround yourself with good people that your happy to be around and make you feel mentally "healthy". You are Your Surroundings.

  2. That's a really cool connection to make to Outliers, and really great awareness of how living in a less stressful, more group-oriented society will help people live longer, better lives.

  4. Chill post. Great connection to outliers.Your mom is always telling us how a family works together and helps everyone out. The way she lived really is a great way of living, and friends and family should always have relationships based off of that. I know your mom has always spoke very highly of Aunt Marie and tries to teach us her good morals.
